On Spiritual Growth Becoming More Like Christ
He must increase, but I must decrease. – John 3:30
The goal of every Christian is to become like Christ. This mission is a lifelong journey. The point of attainment isn’t here on earth. Nevertheless, we need to daily tweak little parts of our lives with His help, to look more like Him.
Spiritual growth is keeping in step with God, bearing more fruits of His Spirit and yielding less and less to the desires of our nature. The nature of man is sinful. It has selfish desires and wants, mainly, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life (1 John 2:16). Deepening your relationship with God will let Him rub off you in every aspect of your life.
So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions.
For some, spiritual growth is dramatic. Others have a rather subtle switch. Either way, it builds up steadily over time. It requires consistent deliberate effort.
God longs to build a great relationship with you. He wants to transform you to look like Christ. He wants you to light up the world. Follow these steps to grow spiritually.
- Talk to him about everything. He’s the perfect partner to discuss anything with. Pray.
- Let Him speak to you through His word. Scripture contains the mind of God. Read the bible.
- Think about Him. Spend time pondering on what He’s said to you. Ponder on who He is. Meditate.
- Do what He says. He’s always right. But feel free to ask questions. It’s a relationship.
- Trust Him. Trust is vital in every relationship. This one is no different.
Spiritual growth is not as spooky as it’s made to seem. Start living with the consciousness of God’s presence. Talk to Him always. Open the bible app on your phone to read verses of scripture often. Think about how you can apply them to your life. Go ahead to apply them and know that no matter what happens, God’s got you.
