Last year, I had the opportunity to work towards building a friendship I am totally grateful for now. Although at the time we spent most of our weekends together because we had the same weekend commitments, I knew I wanted to take it a step further.

Currently, we talk every day and are very much involved in each other’s lives. We have built our friendship over the months and we are closer than before.

Friendship with God just like that of man, requires time, effort and energy. You can choose to get as close as you want to by the amount of work you put into it.

Building a friendship with God is not abstract when we look at it from this perspective;

Access The Presence of God

The presence of God is a promise to believers.

“I will never leave you nor forsake you”.  – Hebrews 13:5

It is not just a feeling. It is not just falling under the anointing. It is God being there with you all the time ready to connect with you. He is ever-present. Why not get closer to the one person who will forever be there for you?

Communicate

We yearn to talk to our friends and significant others because they’ve become a part of our lives. We call in the mornings, send a text during the day and call at night to give a rundown of the day’s events.

This is why “Pray without ceasing” makes so much sense. Talking to God every single time becomes easier when you understand His constant presence and support. Just like looking forward to sharing happenings with the people we love, we can do that by sharing our thoughts with God. How cool is this?

We don’t have to limit praying to just the mornings and evenings. We have to include God in our day.

Obedience

“If you love me you will obey my commandments”. Obedience to God should be done out of love. And your love for anything grows deeper as you spend more time with it. This works for our friendship with God as well. When you acknowledge the presence of God and constantly communicate with Him, your love for Him grows deeper and obedience of His word follows with meaning. You get to understand why He wants you to do what and even if you do not understand Him, you trust that He has your wellbeing at heart.

Becoming friends with God is what all believers should desire. When we become friends with God telling other people about our friend, God, will be easier because we will have so many intimate moments to share. God wants to get close to you. Are you willing to draw near to Him?
